Swanage Churches
‘Thy Kingdom Come’
Praying for our nation this Pentecost
8pm Sunday 8th May to 8am Sunday 15th May
This year Justin Welby and John Sentamu, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, have challenged the whole Church in England to join in prayer for the evangelisation of our nation.  They write, ”In the week leading up to Pentecost (May 8th-15th, 2016) we long to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches….At the heart of our prayers will be the words that Jesus Christ himself taught us - ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’

For more info you can see a video message from Archbishop Justin.
So that’s the challenge.  How will we respond to it?  Well we believe this is something for the whole Church in Swanage to embrace, not just the Anglican Team, so Churches Together are planning to respond to the Archbishops’ Call to Prayer in a way that can include us all.

This is the plan.  There will be a week of 24/7 prayer – that is to have folks praying 24 hours a day, from 8pm on Sunday 8th May right through to 8am Sunday 15th May. We’ll be praying in relays, each taking an hour at a time.  We’d like everyone to sign up, if possible not just for one hour but for a regular slot if you can.

The idea is that during the day from 8am-8pm we will pray at St Aldhelm’s Chapel (the side chapel) at St Mary’s Church.  There will be tea and coffee and literature available at St Mary’s to encourage us to pray.  Then at night time from 8pm-8am we will sign up to pray at home. We’ll also be holding Morning and Evening Prayer at 8am and 6pm every day and meetings for open worship and prayer at 9am and 7pm, plus communion on Wednesday at 11am.  So there’ll be something for everyone whatever sort of prayer you find most helpful – whether it’s open prayer and worship, more liturgical prayer services or silent prayer.  The important thing is that we pray.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the Kingdom the Power and the Glory.
